My artwork has been influenced by political cartoons and commercial illustration. I blend my cartoon-like style with a fine art sensibility shaped by the works of Hopper, Matisse, De Chirico, and others. I take into careful consideration composition, spatial relationships, texture, and other formal devices to support and enhance the content of my work, and to grab and maintain viewers’ attention. I also use humor and playful color schemes to hold viewers’ interest, and to keep my paintings and drawings from seeming preachy or heavy-handed.
My recent work has focused on the production and consumption of images and spectacle, and on the role that these processes play in our society, which is overloaded with visual media. In most of these works I aim for an open-endedness that invites contemplation and multiple interpretations.
